Why such fascination in flea markets? Granted, every Saturday the Naschmarkt in Vienna draws the attention of the crowd. The site is akin to a museum full of interesting artefacts. Yet unlike the conventional museum each of its items has no specific historical value- significance here is abundant but negotiable. Perhaps then a better analogy for the Nashmarkt would be the archaeological site, however, contrary to fossils, its artefacts are transient; they are traded, exchanged and often disposed of by the end of the day. Thus the only way to collate such ephemeral material would be to make ones own private collection of it, or alternatively to record it in situ.
